Synthesis and Swelling Behavior of pH-Sensitive Chitosan/Polyvinylpyrrolidone Hydrogels for Drug Delivery Applications

Abstract :
pH-sensitive hydrogels have attracted considerable attention due to their great potential in targeted drug delivery systems. In this study, a novel composite hydrogel based on chitosan (a natural bioactive polymer) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP, a synthetic polymer that improves mechanical properties) was synthesized via free radical polymerization using N, N′-methylene bisacrylamide (as a crosslinker) and ammonium persulfate (as an initiator). The swelling behavior of the hydrogel was investigated within the physiological pH range (1.5–7.4). The results revealed a strong pH-dependent swelling behavior, with a maximum swelling ratio of 1876% at pH = 1.5 and a minimum of 553% at pH = 7.4. This pronounced sensitivity to pH variations makes the synthesized hydrogel a promising candidate for use as a smart drug delivery carrier, particularly in acidic environments.
