Abstract :

This study develops a machine learning framework to classify spaceflight-induced changes in the astronaut skin microbiome. Using multi-omics data from NASA’s GLDS-566 and OSD-574 datasets (Inspiration4 mission), we analyzed four pre-flight and four post-flight swab samples. A hybrid feature selection approach identified four key taxonomic features. Four classifiers were evaluated under repeated cross-validation, with Logistic Regression achieving the best performance (accuracy = 0.875, F1 = 0.865). Results demonstrate the potential of machine learning for detecting subtle microbial shifts, enabling predictive biomarkers and supporting precision health strategies for future human space exploration.
