Abstract :
Hydrogels are intelligent systems used in controlled drug delivery. In this study, hydrogels based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were synthesized via free radical polymerization. N,N′ Methylene bisacrylamide (NNMBA) was used as a crosslinking agent and ammonium persulfate (APS) was used as an initiator. Combining these two polymers (CMC and PVP) can lead to the creation of a composite hydrogel with improved properties. Chemical cross-linking is a common method to improve mechanical stability and create stable covalent bonds and hydrogels. In this study swelling rate of hydrogels based on CMC/PVP was investigated at pH 1.5, 4, and 7.4, showing the best swelling at alkaline pH. The results indicate that these polymeric carriers have high potential for use in oral drug delivery systems.
