Optimization of AODV Routing Protocol in Ad Hoc Networks Using Particle Swarm Optimization Algorithm

Abstract :
Optimization of routing protocols is one of the significant challenges in Ad Hoc networks. One of the effective routing protocols in these networks is AODV protocol. This paper aims to optimize the AODV routing protocol in Ad Hoc networks using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. After determining the range of network parameters, the objective function of the algorithm is defined like other optimization algorithms. To define the objective function, four parameters, namely the ratio of packets arrived at the destination to the packets sent at the source (PDR), the average time of packet arrival from the destination to the source (AE2ED), routing transfer (NRL) and the number of hops on the route (NHP) are considered. The PSO algorithm obtains the optimal values of the parameters using the minimization of the defined objective function. After determining the objective function through the weighted sum of the mentioned parameters, the optimization of the objective function is realized using PSO. The simulation results show that by obtaining values of 0.87, 4, 0.049, and 1.5 respectively for PDR, NHP, AE2ED, and NRL parameters, the proposed method performs better than similar algorithms such as ACO and ICA.
